Tracks to Triumph

The Strategic Role of Railroads in the Civil War

General Sherman sized it up like this.

“Sherman stated in his biography that the railroad offered “the sole means of transporting supplies, and only then, because we had the men and the means to maintain and defend them in addition to what were necessary to our to overcome the enemy.”

He observed that to sustain his 100,000 men army, with 35,000 animals for 196-day campaign over a 473-mile supply line would have required 36,000 16-mule teams, each hauling 2-tons of freight, 20 miles per day.”

Then, plus due to the rut filled roads of the day, it would have been impossible to keep this up for the full 196-days straight.”

This shows just how much difference the railroad did make,

The book is in editing, and I should have the book about mid-April. This will be the picture for the cover.

I will keep you informed. Please share with your friends.
